Common problems and their likely solutions

Firstly, try downloading and installing the latest version of Weather Display, particularly if the version you're running is more than a week or two old. If this still doesn't fix the problem, take a look at this list of common problems and see if any of these address your problem. If you still can't find a solution, post a message in the Weather-Watch Forum.

I get a "Read beyond end of file error"

  1. Exit WD
  2. Delete the files: latest.inf and/or latestindoor.inf and/or graphdata.inf and/or graphdata2.inf, from the WD datafiles directory.
  3. Restart weather display

Data arrives from station then stops

If you see the text "Client - COM port disconnected", then you have configured WD in client mode. Client mode allows one copy of WD to collect data from another copy of WD that is actually connected to the weather station hardware. To change this setting:

  1. Go to the FTP setup screen page
  2. Select the Client/Server setup tab
  3. Switch off the option 'Client server (use only for when you are getting data from a version connected to a weather station)'
  4. Restart WD

Some settings have been lost when the program starts, or when I click to perform an action, nothing happens

The first place to check is on the Program Error Log menu item on the View menu. If there is an access violation when the program first starts, then check if you have previously enabled either the weather voice or web cam options.

If weather voice is enabled, make sure you have a suitable speech driver installed. If you don't have a speech driver installed, you will most likely need to download the British female speech driver.

If direct web cam capture is enabled, go back to the Settings page, and untick 'Restore settings on restart'.

Other errors can result from a corrupted wdisplay.ini file, in the folder c:\windows or c:\winnt (depending on what operating system you are running). There is a backup of this file produced every 10 minutes, called wdisplayinibackup.ini, in the folder where Weather Display is installed.

Wunderground only updates when I click on update now

Check that you have the Main Internet switch turned ON (under Setup, FTP/Internet setup, Connections). If you are running your own web server, either on the same PC as WD or over a LAN, and you have unticked the option 'Use Weather Display ftpupd.exe' because you don't need to FTP files to the web server, you will need to tick the option 'Still use for all other'.

My web page only updates when I click on Action, Update Internet now

Check that you have the Main Internet switch turned ON (under Setup, FTP/Internet setup, Connections).

My web page is not updating after I have installed a new verison of WD

It may be because of an updated version of the ftpupd.exe file, and your firewall has blocked its access. You will need to configure your firewall to give it FTPUPD permission to access the Internet.

I have set an image as a background for the summary image, or other screen, but I don't like it anymore. How do I reset it?

Simply delete or rename the background image file and restart Weather Display.

I have created a custom web page file with custom tags, but there is no wx.html file being updated

Make sure the custom web page file is called wxlocal.html (and not wxlocal.htm) and that it is in the webfiles folder, or where you have configured Weather Display to save the web files (under Setup, FTP/Internet Setup, Web Files).

Every minute some strange data suddenly appears

Check you don't have the option 'Use this metar data to update the weather station data' enabled (under Setup, FTP/Internet Setup, FTP/metar download).

My weather report emails are not being sent at the scheduled times

Try scheduling the send time to a time when there are no other scheduled agenda items.

The DUN/ISP name in the list under connections is now incorrect after I have changed my dial up settings to another provider

You will need to change the DUN name (under Your Dial up networking settings in the Control Panel in Windows Setup).

The Icon says its dark all the time!

Check you have your station latitude and longitude set up correctly (under View, Sun/moon). A new formula is in use, and if you live in the USA, the longitude (i.e West/East coordinate) will be postive number now.

The weather icon never changes

Check you do not have the option 'Use this image as the icon' ticked (under Input Daily Weather). Alternatively check if you have ticked the option 'Use the forecast icon as the icon' (under Setup, Summary Image / Icon setup).

The program was not running for a few hours, but the graph stops then starts abruptly from old to new data

Under Graph Setup turn on Graph Time Delay. This works best for short duration data breaks, but does not apply to the WS2010 data logger.

The program crashes just as it starts to download data from my Davis WMII at program start up

Weather display has a bug where it does not properly handle a full data logger buffer that has wrapped around. Please clear the data logger.

I would like to start again

Either...

  1. Install Weather Display to a new directory
  2. Use Notepad to create an empty file called 2wd.txt (or 3wd.txt, etc) in the new directory
  3. Start the newly installed Weather Display

Or...

  1. Delete the settings found in wdisplay.ini. This file will be in either C:\Windows or C:\Winnt depending on the version of Windows you are running. Your Windows/Winnt directory could also be on another drive letter.
  2. Delete the registry entry wdisplayftp.ini from the registry using regedit.exe.

The program has an error at noon (or 1pm)

You probably need to delete the Fire Weather Index data file.

  1. Exit WD
  2. Delete the file fwi.inf, in the folder datafiles
  3. Restart WD

My averages/extreme data is not updating

  • Check View, Program Error Log for any errors.
  • Check that you have ticked 'Do averages/extreme update' under Setup, FTP/Internet Setup, Web Upload Times.
  • Try using Action, Update averages/exteme now.

If none of these work, then...

  1. Delete the mothly and weekly report files in the folder webfiles, i.e for December 2005, delete december2005.htm and weekrep.htm.
  2. Delete the file dailylog.txt, in the folder logfiles.
  3. Exit and restart WD.

You can reset/recreate the averages/extreme web file, via View, Averages/Extreme (scroll down).

I have some bad records in my all time records

Use Action, Reset Selected All Time Records

On my web page, I have a separate weather station name in a box all on its own just before the default web table?

Delete the file datahtm0.txt, in the folder web files, and then restart WD.

I want to add my own links/images to my web page, but they keep getting overwritten!

You can add what you like to the files datahtm0.txt, datahtm3.txt, but to alter datahtm2.txt, you will need to tick, let me manage datahtm2.txt, under Setup, FTP/Internet Setup, Web Files.

I set the web files to update each minute under Web Upload Times, but it doesn't happen!

You will need to tick which files to update in the box at the bottom of that setup screen. It is recommended that you use the option Setup, Customise the Internet File Creation/Upload. Enable this with the master over-ride switch.

The words and numbers and the images on my web site are large and or cut off, why?

You cannot use Large Fonts in Windows with WD. You can change this setting in Windows Desktop Properties, Effects option.

Everything but the main html web page is updating for my web page!

You may have Use Custom Web Page enabled under Setup, FTP/Internet Setup, Custom Web Page. In which case you would need to have the custom tags as found in the file owntemplate.txt in a file called wxlocal.html. This file gets converted into wx.html, which is then uploaded instead of the filename you have set under webfiles.

The barometer value is way lower than that on my station console. Why?

Weather Display uses the raw unadjusted barometer reading from your station. You will need to add a barometer offset, under Setup, Barometer Offset, Other Offsets and Rainfall. The offset can be large for some stations, e.g. for the Oregon Scientific WMR968/928 stations it will be approximately 61mb.

The rainfall totals are zero, but my weather station has rain recorded. Why?

Weather Display stores its rain totals separately from the weather station, so that you can set rain seasons, or use 9am reset time). You will need to enter starting rain totals, under Setup, Barometer Offset, Other Offsets and Rainfall.

There are spikes on the real time graph, and tha value reported is like 3600. Why?

You will need to decrease the minimum temperature scale in the bottom right hand corner of the real time graph.
